A coloring book featuring fantastic beings of color ‘

An artist from Plymouth, Minnesota wants to help children of color see themselves in a different light.

As a digital artist, Vegalia Jean-Pierre enjoys creating fantastic characters, but like many black artists, growing up, she hasn’t seen many who look like her.

“A lot of us love cartoons and fantasy, and there aren’t a lot of black or brown characters in this space,” Jean-Pierre said.

So Jean-Pierre created a coloring book for children of all ages called Melanin Magic. The approximately 100-page book features 35 magical colored characters, such as mermaids and fairies created by 14 black artists from around the world.

“I’ve always wanted to create more representation – especially positive representation – for the black community and that’s one of the ways I can do that.”

Jean-Pierre is no stranger to coloring outside the lines.

Earlier this year, she went viral after launching a set of digital brushes that make it easy to draw dark hair textures like braids, curls, and twists. But she hopes her latest project will help children of different ethnicities be reflected in the mystical beings they color.

“I’ve gotten so many DMs and comments from people saying how much they wished they had this when they were kids. Or they’re so excited to have this book for their niece or nephew,” Jean-Pierre said. .

Jean-Pierre hopes that the creation of more diverse fantasy worlds will influence other artists in the real world.

“I’m happy it’s going to people who aren’t just black, and it creates a space where people can be inspired to create more characters of color,” Jean-Pierre said.
