Woman creates Holland coloring book to remember the city she loves

HOLLAND, Michigan – A native of the Netherlands uses her artistic skills to share her love for the city and to always remember its many iconic features.

Kelli Nina Perkins and her husband hit the road in their campervan when the pandemic began, but their roots have always remained by the lake. In order to remember and spread the joy of Holland, Perkins used his talents to create a one-of-a-kind coloring book to showcase all things Tulip City.

“It really touched people in so many ways that I never expected, and it’s just great,” said Perkins.

Holland is where Perkins and her husband raised their daughters. It was also there that she worked at the Herrick District Library for over 30 years.

“It’s an amazing city,” she said, “and especially in downtown Holland where you have a park, farmer’s market, shops, library and lake all within walking distance.

A little over a year ago, Kelli and her husband decided to pack their bags and explore the country in their motorhome. Now they only come back to Holland a few times a year, but still consider it their home port.

“On the road, I felt really nostalgic and remembered what I would do in Holland if it hadn’t been for a pandemic,” Perkins said.

And as part of her handling of being completely insane stuck inside, Kelli created designs of the beloved landmarks of the city she knew and loved.

“I started drawing them as a way to visit and remember them,” she said.

Months later, the Holland, Michigan coloring book was officially complete.

“It came to life and now I have it in my hands which is very exciting,” said Perkins.

The coloring book contains 44 different black and white drawings of all things Holland. Perkins said it was very difficult to pick just 44 because the city has so much to offer.

“When you walk through downtown Holland, you can’t help but be inspired by architecture,” said Perkins. “This is what really gets my juices flowing because it’s absolutely beautiful and of course historic.”

“So the coloring book has a lot of buildings, some of my favorite businesses and other iconic stops,” she added.

Perkins’ designs were initially just a few free printable downloads, but when thousands of people showed interest in what she was doing, she wanted to develop it even more.

“There are so many people investing and loving Holland,” she said. “I hope this book gives you a way to remember the places you love in Holland, whether you are still here, have moved, or are only visiting a few times a year.”

The ‘Holland Michigan’ coloring book is now available at Amazon, and in digital copy on Etsy.

Kelli said she is also working on getting hard copies to stores so people can cherish the city the way she does, but this process may take a bit longer.

“I started to think about what I missed about Holland, and I was just amazed at how much it touched me,” Perkins said. “There seemed to be a great deal of interest in celebrating all of the great things that are great about this place.”

Perkins and her husband also run a YouTube channel called “Outer Limits Open Road” which highlights their travels across the country.
