The second season of Its dark materials, based on the series of the same name by Philip Pullman, recently ended. This latest adaptation is written by Harry Potter and the Cursed Child writer, Jack Thorne. As I watched, I couldn’t help but wonder what Hogwarts houses some of these characters would be in.
Lyra Silver Tongue – Gryffindor
Lyra is a complex protagonist who possesses characteristics belonging to several Houses. His last name was given to him by Iofur Raknison due to his ability to lie well to advance his own causes. This manipulation is a trait belonging to Slytherin. However, Lyra is also an incredibly intelligent girl who can read the alethiometer without any training. Plus, she’s incredibly loyal to her friends. After all, she only left Oxford and pursued the Gobblers to find and save her friend, Roger. Nonetheless, her willingness to undergo this journey and her bravery in meeting the obstacles she faces put her in Gryffindor.
Will Parry – Hufflepuff
Like Lyra, Will also faced many hardships on his journey. Forced to flee his world, he found a window to another where he finally discovered Lyra. Although initially hesitant to open up to her, once he does, the two form a deep bond and he takes care of her the best he can. His unwavering loyalty to his friends and family places him a Hufflepuff.
Marisa Coulter – Slytherin
Mrs. Coulter is the embodiment of a Slytherin. She is incredibly ambitious and does whatever it takes to get what she wants. At the start of Series 1, she did whatever it took to secure herself power, even committing heinous acts against children for the Magisterium. Later, she was concerned with finding Lyra, and she was more than happy to use Carlo to do it.
Lord Asriel Belacqua – Slytherin
Lord Asriel possesses many Ravenclaw traits, including great intelligence. His quest for knowledge is what drives him north and through the anomaly in the world however. But like Marisa, he does whatever it takes to get what he wants, even if it means harming or killing others. His cunning and manipulative nature places him more of a Slytherin.
Lee Scoresby – Hufflepuff
Balloonist Lee Scoresby is a kind and fatherly man who becomes attached to Lyra when he meets her. He is committed to his cause and helps him save the kidnapped children, which prevents them from having their demons separated from them. He is incredibly loyal to Lyra and does whatever he can to help her, even when they are in different worlds. This loyalty makes him a true Hufflepuff.
Lord Carlo Boréal / Sir Charles Latrom – Slytherin
Like Marisa, Carlo is incredibly manipulative and doesn’t hesitate to use others to get what he wants. He steals the Alethiometer from Lyra and uses it to have Lyra and Will steal the Subtle Knife from him. The fact that her demon is also a serpent puts even more emphasis on the Slytherin connection.
