Newly Discovered Mega Man Materials Reveal Concept Art For New Anime And OVA

The last few years have been pretty dry when it comes to Mega Man’s releases, but it hasn’t always been that way. Not only were the main and spin-off Mega Man games plentiful in the 1990s, the Blue Bomber was featured in other Capcom titles, anime, and cartoons as well.

After generous donations from the Mega Man community, Protodude, who runs the Mega Man news site The Rockman Corner, recently acquired and shared some nice animated cels of some very early art concepts for a Mega Man cartoon. The style seems much more inspired by traditional Japanese anime than the more Western style the series ended up with under Ruby Spears in 1994.

Following a recent Twitter chat between Protodude and character designer Nobuyoshi Habara, it was confirmed that Habara drew the first two cels himself when the anime was in development in 1992. For comparison, here’s how the final product turned out:

Protodude also shared five pages of a coloring book based on the rare Mega Man OVA, “Do Your Best, Rockman!” Watch out for fires and earthquakes! If this title is unfamiliar to you, it’s not surprising; he is considered obscure even among diehard Mega Man fans. Protodude explains, “This is a unique educational anime. According to the memories of some Japanese fans, the program would have been distributed between 1989 and 1992.

Seeing a story discovered like this is such a treat, but Protodude promises to continue researching the origins of these materials and to share more information in future updates. Make sure you stay tuned Protodude Twitter and The Rockman Corner!
