Friday Sector Leaders: Energy, Materials


The best performing sector at midday on Friday was the energy sector, up 1.9%. Within the sector, Halliburton Company (ticker: HAL) and Hess Corp (ticker: HES) are two large leading stocks, posting a gain of 3.9% and 3.5%, respectively. Among energy ETFs, a sector-tracking ETF is the SPDR Energy Select Sector ETF (Ticker: XLE), which is up 1.9% on the day and 46.95% year-to-date. Halliburton Company, meanwhile, is up 32.49% year-to-date and Hess Corp is up 63.89% year-to-date. Together, HAL and HES represent approximately 4.6% of XLE’s underlying holdings.

The second best performing sector was the Materials sector, up 0.1%. Among the large materials stocks, CF Industries Holdings Inc (Ticker: CF) and Mosaic Co (Ticker: MOS) are the most notable, posting a gain of 3.5% and 2.9%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking materials stocks is the Materials Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLB), which is up 0.2% as of midday and down 16.74% year-to-date. CF Industries Holdings Inc, meanwhile, is up 51.29% year-to-date, and Mosaic Co is up 39.46% year-to-date. Together, CF and MOS represent approximately 4.9% of XLB’s underlying holdings.
